Pink Fog Studios bio picture

Welcome to Dave Z's blog!

"Many years ago, I attended an exhibit at the Modern Museum of Art in New York City. In their display, the artists had replicated a 1960s-era nursing home hospital room from Siberia. The setting was lighted by gentle window light and completely still except for the sound of a slide machine marking time as it flashed photograph after photograph on the wall in front of the empty bed in their room.

You see, when people get old and sick and find themselves in a nursing home, they become increasingly isolated. This increased isolation leads to increased levels of anxiety and depression. A doctor found that if the nursing home staff built a slideshow from the patient’s photo albums and played it for 15 minutes a day, it would lift the patient out of his or her depression, and this became a form of treatment.

That is the moment I fell in love with photography. I fell in love with it because of its unique capability to capture and preserve the places we’ve been, the people we’ve known and loved, and the moments we’ve shared with them. It is vital to our well-being.”

-Dave Z.

Catholic Wedding Traditions, Ana and Morgan

Ana and Morgan were married on Saturday in a Roman Catholic wedding ceremony surrounded by caring family and friends.  Just before Ana was ready to walk down the isle, the churches wedding coordinator found her and said that the priest wanted to see her in his chambers. Like a good wedding photographer I followed the bride. Once we reached the priests chambers, he told us in a very serious voice that “I need to ask the bride a question, alone”. As I turned to leave I snapped the photo below I call “Confessions” just before he closed the door. I love the expression on Ana’s face. Here are some of my favorite catholic wedding photos from Ana and Morgan’s day.

September 4, 2009 - 6:19 am Luis Connor - During our search for a wedding photographer, we had met with four photographers before finally meeting Dave Z. Hands down, we knew right away that Pink Fog Photography was our choice over "the others". In our first meeting, Dave was very professional and took the time to find out exactly what we were looking for. Once he had a taste for what we wanted, he took the time to show us his work and explained all the different styles of his photography. Needless to say, his work spoke for itself and we booked him for our wedding that same day! Dave and staff make the photographer decision easy during the entire event process. From planning to album creation, they were always very accommodating and made sure we got what we wanted for our big day. Dave doesn't miss any details. (I promise). If you want a no-nonsense, professional photographer that truly cares about their clients, Pink Fog is your answer. Dave, thanks for your hard work and awesome sense of humor! We enjoyed the ride while it lasted. -Luis & Ashley

Chinese Wedding Tea Ceremony, Gina and Ben

Gina and Ben had a destination Hawaiian wedding on June 6th on the beautiful island of Maui attended by close friends and family. Yesterday, they hosted a local reception for extended friends and family. They began the day with a tradition Chinese custom, a Chinese wedding tea ceremony, where Gina wore a traditional Chinese wedding dress. Here are some of my favorite pictures from the day.

July 14, 2009 - 6:02 pm Gina Arguello - My husband and I were lucky enough to be able to get married in Maui, but we still wanted to have a reception at home for all of our friends and family. This meant we had to find 2 sets of vendors! As soon as I had registered on theknot.com, I began getting vendor ads and offers in the mail. While they gave me a place to start, I’m the type of person who likes to research before I make a purchase. I want to hear what real people have experienced. This is how I found Pink Fog Studios and Dave Z. I liked what I heard, so I set up a time to sit and talk to Dave. Dave sat and listened to what we would like to have, told us when something would not be feasible, and offered alternatives that he had seen in other weddings. So, we signed a contract! Later we also decided to have engagement photos taken. While setting up the where and when, Dave tried to really understand what it was we were looking for. When the day came, my fiancé forget ALL of his outfits! I could have killed him, and while he was definitely put out, Dave was awesome about it! We made another appointment, and this time, I made sure we were both ready! Dave took us to a great location and we got to be models for a day. He took a bunch of pictures and was great about directing us. Our photographer in Maui was pleasant, but did not take the time to tell us to move an arm, fix my hair, kiss her cheek, look this away - things like that. He had a lot of cool ideas for spots, lighting, and poses. When our reception day arrived, Dave was there early. We had a Tea Ceremony prior to our cocktail hour, and Dave made sure he had gotten each shot before moving on. The lighting was beautiful! During the family pictures, Dave was able to rearrange half-listening aunts and uncles into position efficiently. We had a little extra time, and Dave seized each minute to take a few more shots. Dave was all over the room during the reception getting reactions, and was even on the floor at one point! Dave and Linda are both quick to return emails and phone calls, and are true professionals. There was a mix-up with our engagement prints, and Pink Fog fixed the problem quickly. Dave is definitely the type to tell you what he thinks and not mince words, so take advantage and ask his opinion. -Gina
